Hilary Stock JOURNEYS, 2022
I always remember my grandmother out walking in Cornwall. She would go up along the path to the Coastguards, all the way to church in the next village, or simply around the harbour to the shops. She didn’t own a car and thought nothing of embarking on some quite long journeys.
During our summer visits, we would set off, her and Mum idling along deep in discussion as we trailed behind, sharing found treasure and made up stories. That Cornish habit has stayed with me, and I would happily spend each and every day walking.
This year, I have put together a series of journeys around the Roseland, sharing the things that caught my eye, in the hope that they kindle others’ memories and feelings.
St ANTHONY HEAD TO PLACE
From the exposed point of St Anthony Head, the coastal path curls its way around the outer edge of the peninsula into the protection and calmer waters of Place. This favourite walk allows you to marvel at the work of the lighthouse and paraffin store, the busy working port of Falmouth and the spread of St Mawes, whilst enjoying the coves and inlets along the route. I love the contrast of the often blowy, more exposed section of this journey, with its distinctive pine trees, to the peace and tranquillity of the little church and graveyard that welcomes you on arrival in Place. It always feels like you have travelled quite a long way in a relatively short distance.
