Judgement

I was reading an article about a celebrity the other day and it occurred to me how easy it is to choose just one side of someone and define them by that opinion.

We are all complex humans. We all have good days and bad days. Catch me on a bad one and you’ll have a very different picture of who I am compared to those who see me on a good one.

I like to see it like a hall of mirrors. Wherever you look, you’ll see different reflections before you. Different sides of who we are. They all seem (and are) the same person, but depending on the day, time and situation, our personalities can differ hugely.

One must only take the time to wait and get to know someone to realise they are as complex as ourselves. After all, how many times in life have we made a judgment about someone on first meeting, only to have that judgment challenged over time? It’s the same for everyone.

One thing is always true, though. Whatever judgment we make is based on our personalities entirely, not the reflection we see. Only we hold the key to challenging the opinions we hold. I like to start by seeing everyone as a child, desperate for love and acceptance. It can crumble an opinion quickly.

Allowing our prejudices to be challenged: what a great change to start this new year with? Wouldn’t it be a wonderful one if we all wiped the slate clean and started afresh with all those we thought we’d ’sussed out’?
